Bush walks from our house
Just 10 minutes from the apartment is the entry to the Whangarei Subtropical Quarry Garden.
You can stay in the valley and enjoy the wonderful plants and the lake or you can take one of the loop walks to the top of the quarry. The Upper Loop Walk brings you right to the top, with many lookout points, a short Kauri side track, to the top of the waterfall and along a steep stairway. You will follow a line of dozens of young recently planted Kauri trees, see hundreds of tree ferns, four metre high cutting grass, tea trees and a dense stretch of real New Zealand bush. The Lower Loop Walk follows a half altitude on the middle part of the track. You’ll probably hear a Tui scream his heart out and maybe a fantail will accompany you on the way.
At the end of Russell Road starts Rust Track, a very steep path that leads up the hill through native bush. On the ridge you’ll follow the Coronation Reserve path towards the Whangarei Quarry Gardens, you can also continue on the Upper Loop Track and descend on the other side of the Quarry Garden.
